I want to buy and install a programmable JAMMA pcb inmy original Donkey Kong arcade machine. What should i buy?
Hi, i have an original Donkey Kong arcade machine that i never play anymore. I want to buy a programmable JAMMA pcb so that I can play more games. I have no idea what to buy and where to buy one that is compatible with my machine. Also, will i need any special tools to install it?
I think that you’re out of luck. JAMMA machines are more modern Japanese games, usually fighting or shooter games. They usually have about 12 buttons and two joysticks because there are a lot of fighting games. Considering that Donkey Kong has a joystick and one button, there aren’t going to be any JAMMA games you can even play, unless you completely replace the harness and controls.
Here’s the good news, though. If you buy other Nintendo PCB’s from the era of Donkey Kong, they are largely interchangeable. Most companies required some more complex work to convert machines, but Nintendo PCBs can be switched out pretty easily iirc. So your best bet for being able to play more than one game is to buy more Nintendo PCBs. There may even be a probrammable/multigame Nintendo PCB. I mostly work with Atari machines, though, so I don’t know about that.

EDIT: By the way, special tools are not required (unless you want to convert it to JAMMA, which would probably require stripping the entire machine and even doing some substantial woodworking). Just a screwdriver and, if you want to troubleshoot, maybe a multimeter.
